There seems to be a rush by people to get their businesses online with social media because it's still fairly new. This means that you're going to have some competition when you're working on your social media marketing strategy. Here in this guide you will find a few things to avoid when you're working on one.

1. You aren't providing enough updates or new content.

People sign up for a social media site because it caught their interest for some reason. Perhaps they were interested in the service or product you were selling. Maybe they just liked a link someone else shared with them. Never forget that people enjoy getting new information. Figure out what your target market enjoys in terms of content and provide them with new things to do every few days if possible. When you're behind or don't have time, think about asking someone to help monitor your site for you.

2. Acting unprofessional and posting things you shouldn't isn't good.

There's a time to act with a sense of humor in mind or to spam your buddies with inane messages. This isn't going to be one of those times. Sure, it doesn't hurt to be a little personal with your customers, but don't overdo it. You also need to watch out for sending the same spam message over and over. If you have contacts that are online at different times of day, then send out your posts at those times, but don't repeat them too often. This may anger others and it's best to avoid that. Try to find a balance between posting too much and posting way too little.

3. Not checking out what your competitors are doing.

There's a difference between doing what works and outright copying someone else's work. Look to your competitors that are doing fairly well and see if you can identify things you could use in your arsenal. Of course, outright plagiarism could get you into trouble, but having contests similar to theirs and things like that really aren't bad ideas. Who knows, you may even find someone new that you can work with.

4. Not taking the time to respond to customers is bad business.

When you make a complaint at a store, you expect someone to help you to fix it. Online is no different. Even though you really can't physically see the person, there is still someone operating that keyboard. Make sure you check your social media website as often as you can. Even if there are only positive comments, it doesn't hurt to tell someone thank you. It gives your profile a personality and makes you seem more human than just a business.

To be a great social media marketer, you must take the right steps in order to do so. The ones listed above are a starting point and can help you begin. The best thing to do would be to follow people in your target audience if you wish to get a solid following of potential customers. If you put these things into practice, the sky is the limit.
